Mammal. Confused with apes because of their small nub of a tail, celebes apes are really monkeys. Living and traveling in groups of 5 to 50 individuals, they spend a lot of time in trees eating fruit. Very social and smart, group members will hug, groom each other, and smack their lips in greeting. Females stay with their birth group while males seek out other groups. Males are larger, weighing 9-16 kg (20-35 lb) while females weigh 6-11 kg (13-24 lb). Both reach about 51-56 cm (20-22 in) in height. They spend half the day foraging. The males move and rest more, but the females eat and socialize more. |
